DESCRIPTION
- Our ongoing partnership with the estate of Alexander Girard continues into our SS25 collection with Cutout (pink), a print that Girard originally designed in 1954 during his tenure as the Head of Fabric and Textile Division at Herman Miller.
- More than 70 years later, Cutout serves as a prime example of Girard's masterful graphic work.
- As a multi-disciplinary designer, Girard often leveraged his experience across mediums in his print work.
- Cutout is indicative of this, with roots in geometrical sculpture and block printing techniques.
- When he originally created the print, Girard used physical blocks to stamp dye directly onto fabric.
- However, armed with Herman Miller's production methods, Cutout was soon reengineered for screen printing.
- Just like block printing, screen printing can create "off-register" designs, where the slight misalignment of the print can mix pigments and create new hues.
- Cutout's genius is based in this concept, featuring countless off-register details throughout.
- To continue Girard’s emphasis of quality craftsmanship, we had Cutout meticulously reengineered by our Italian partner mill on a summer-weight 100% cotton poplin.
- Each color was matched to its original Pantone, and extra care was taken to ensure pigments hold fast and resist bleeding.
- This is the first time Cutout has been printed on clothing.
