U S Denim Parka

The U.S. Navy Denim Parka, notably worn aboard the USS Indianapolis in 1942 and commonly referred to as the “Gunner Smock,” has been expertly reimagined by The Real McCoy’s. This modern iteration is crafted from 10 oz. gray weft denim and constructed with durable cotton sewing thread. It retains authentic details, including urea buttons on the chest, a multi-layered front closure, and adjustable cords on the hood and hem to enhance sealing capability—faithfully reflecting the original design. The parka was originally manufactured by the Zielinski Company, renowned for producing the iconic 37J1B jacket in the late 1930s. Designed as workwear, the parka features a generously proportioned silhouette to ensure ease of movement, making it ideal for the physically demanding tasks it was created to support. Initially classified as decontamination clothing, the parka was issued to personnel tasked with hazardous duties, such as gas decontamination. Its hood was designed with a generous cut to accommodate gas masks and could be tightened for a secure, protective fit. The drawcord hem further minimized exposure during risky operations, providing essential protection. This denim parka was later produced in white cotton, seeing extensive use during the D-Day invasion. Amid fears that gas might be deployed to repel the assault, the Navy widely issued these garments.
