Leather Western Jacket

The LEATHER WESTERN JACKET is crafted from cowhide split leather, drawing inspiration from the early leather western jackets of 1963 that mirrored the details of TYPE III denim jackets which were released in 1962. In contrast to earlier versions and staying true to the shapes of that era, our LEATHER WESTERN JACKET boasts a boxier fit with broader shoulders and a shorter body. To maintain thickness and durability in the split leather, precise cuts are made to avoid overlapping, and the leather is then meticulously hammered down during production. In ancient times, artisans explored the practical applications of lower layers of animal hide, using them for shelter and armor. However, a pivotal moment occurred in 1830 with the introduction of the Union Splitting Machine. This innovation revolutionized the efficient splitting of even thinner hide layers, enabling the mass production of leather products. Utilizing a splitting machine allows for the creation of multiple layers, with the uppermost layer transforming into full-grain leather and the lower layers identified as split leather. Split hide leathers found practical applications in factory settings due to their recognized tough and fibrous qualities. Interestingly, they served as armor for welders and line workers, offering protection against flying sparks and metals. The construction of this Trucker style jacket features iconic tandem trapezoid stitching to the front. The contrast collar, in the same vegetable tanned horsehide that can be found on our TYPE A-2 reinforces the early 60s styling and is accompanied by bespoke Joe McCoy Dot Buttons on the front, angled flap pockets and adjustable side tabs.
