While the loopwheel is known for its loose weave and slow production, the sinker machine not only increased efficiency but also allows for the creation of denser, heavier fabrics ideal for robust, high-quality garments. The sweatshirt, born in the 1920s in the USA, was initially conceived as practical athletic wear by Benjamin Russell Jr., a football player dissatisfied with itchy wool jerseys.
