Navy style believed to date back to the First World War.
Knitted from 100% wool, it features a close-fitting silhouette and a folded brim with cable-knit-style detailing, a variation seen on original examples but not formally recorded in uniform regulations.
The watch cap has its origins in naval service from the late 19th century, created as a cold-weather essential for sailors assigned to lookout duty.
The name itself comes from this role, “standing watch,” performed on exposed decks in harsh conditions.
By the time of World War I, wool knit caps were a common part of the Navy’s cold-weather gear, valued for their warmth, simplicity, and ability to layer under hoods or helmets.
While the 1913 U.S.
Navy uniform regulations outlined the material and general dimensions, they left room for design variations, which accounts for the range of surviving vintage styles, including rolled or textured brims.
