  • The tale of Izumo centres on the mythological origins of Japan and the divine beings known as kami 神.
  • In Japanese mythology, Izumo in Southern Honshu is considered one of the most sacred regions, believed to be the birthplace of the gods and the site of their initial gatherings.
  • According to legend, the primordial gods descended from the heavens to establish order and shape the world.
  • Among these deities were Izanagi and Izanami, the divine couple credited with creating the islands of Japan and giving birth to its numerous gods and goddesses.
  • The central event of the Izumo myth is the divine gathering, known as the Kamu-yamato-Ihare-biko-no-mikoto.
  • At this gathering the various gods assembled at Izumo to discuss matters of creation and governance.
  • This meeting is said to have occurred annually, during the tenth month of the lunar calendar, making Izumo a sacred site of pilgrimage and reverence in Japan.
