vintage government-issued original (No.

DSA-1-6978-T-65) with its typical high-neck style, extended the waistband and cuffs, adjusted the fit, and more-essentially
The indigo-dyed ribbed knit will make for a beautiful patina over time.

Construction-wise, our sweater constitutes of a 1×1 “fisherman” ribbed knit body, 3×3 ribbing seamless waistband, and attached high-neck collar, and foldable ribbed knit cuffs.

We kept the vintage close-to-the-body cut of the originals, making our was our first traditional “western snap” shirt and has been released in a variety of denim-related fabrics.

Its fancier legacy is our Dude Rancher today, with more elaborate pattern work inspired by flashier vintage cowboy fashion.

The OG design of the APPALOOSA — discussed here — blends humbler and more plebeian utilitarian roots, mostly lifted from a vintage 1950s Roebucks denim snap shirt (SEARS’ iconic workwear house brand rolled out in 1949.)

Our choice of painted metal snaps over the
Long-standing American brands like Wrangler® — after the takeover from fast fashion conglomerate KONTOOR who now owns Wrangler® and Lee® — seized the opportunity to relocate history.

The streamline design was a take on classic 1950s-60s vintage French casual sportswear shirts: straight shirttail tuck-out style, period-typical “shark fin” collar (“col requin” in French, sometimes referred-to as “Capri” collar), side seam slits, in a long-sleeve pattern.

Our Tahiti shirts were cut from printed bark-cloth 1957.

The WATERTOWN Shirt is basically a short-sleeve version of our TAHITI Shirt, but also a completely different fabric treatment and concept.

For our Area 7161 story, we twisted the design and opted for a fancy cotton/linen indigo chambray fabric, an old MF® favorite previously featured on the Naval Chinos Type No.266ic, the Breezer Type II, and the Riviera Continental Sportcoat & Trousers set.

This premium indigo selvedge 6.5 Oz. chambray is a slubby, tightly-woven blend of construction dates back to 1940s-50s crunch time in factories, when everything on hand was used to meet production deadlines.

The fabric selvedge is displayed in both range of new original or vintage NOS fabrics.

This simple vintage utilitarian style is our spin on classic 1930s-1950s work shirts, with the expected early workwear details such as chin strap and side gussets, and the less-common shoulder yoke dart construction.

This latter detail is the main difference between the Mister Freedom® Sportsman Shirt and its Ranger Shirt compadre.

We scored some fine NOS yardage of 2×1 selvedge denim last year, a lightweight 7.25 Oz. twill in a very desirable lighter indigo shade, and decided to do a small run with it.

Like previous lighter indigo denims we’ve worked with — from the Maverick to the Ranch Blouse — if not Japan) was definitely not a wise choice for cutting shirts with… It is milled on narrow shuttle loom, and, at a width of 29¼’’, is hardly the optimal candidate for a high yielding shirting fabric! Due to pattern cutting technicalities, fabrics with a 29”~32” width are usually ideal for making selvedge jeans, not shirts.

Because you need almost double the amount of yardage to produce one garment, obviously driving the cost up.

But, like desert dweller Edward “take the other” Abbey suggested, this was the less-travelled road we thread.

Additionally, a front row of fancy French milky-white glass buttons (authentic New Old Stock from the 1920s-30s) should make you feel very special, and “cowboy” shirts from our archives, each with specific variations of a style pioneered by Rockmount Ranch Wear legendary CEO Jack Weil starting circa 1946. “Papa Jack”, as he was called, is credited as the father of the modern Western shirt, and the first “designer” to opt for snap button closure, vs. the earlier 1930s shank button styles.

Our DUDE RANCHER pattern was of course twisted MF® style, and has become a Mister Freedom® staple since its 2019 poplin debut in our catalog.

It is today available in a wide range of old school fabrics.

The MF® DUDE RANCHER features the expected western-style front and back curved shoulder yokes, but we decided on arcuate panels subtle-enough to keep the shirt not too “Roy Rogers”, no offense to the Singing Cowboy belting it out on his steed Trigger.

Our playful “M” branding on the chest pockets is disguised as decorative stitching.

The tricked-out forearm pattern and intricate one-piece elbow/cuff reinforcement diamond-shaped placket is quite a garment construction tour de force, for anyone who knows his/her way around a sewing machine.

Another distinctive design choice are the painted metal snaps, reminiscent of sought-after vintage 1950s Ranchcraft or Blue Bell western shirts, as previously featured on the MF® Sportsman printed flannel Camp Shirts.

If pearl snap buttons are more-commonly associated with traditional western shirts, these metal snaps are a bit more subdued and utilitarian.

Our fabric choice for this season is a nod to classic Lee® Westerner™ shirts, popular in the late 1950s/60s with dude ranch vacationers in search of a whiff of a romantic rugged Old West, and “Urban Cowboys” set to deck themselves out in western fashion alike.

In pop music culture, “Cosmic Country” in the 1960s, and a revival in “Country & Western” in the 197os also brought some exposure to the style.

I’ve always loved old sateen Westerners, and scoring one was always thrilling during my rag-picking days.

Mister
STORY

The pattern of the MF® SNIPES is inspired by the earliest model of US Gov-issued uniform shirt in a full button-front design, a departure from earlier 1/2 button-front pullover styles.

Besides the full six-button front placket improvement, the characteristics of the early 8-26C shirt included a one-piece unstructured collar (no collar band), a singular style of elbow reinforcement patch, and two large functional chest pockets, each with a pen compartment.

Remember pens?

The Mister Freedom® SNIPES retains all of that military design DNA, and we only decided to get creative with our choices of fabrics, a departure from the original US Army OD wool blend issue.

This is the third MF® iteration of the SNIPES, with the first 2020 release cut from Buzz Rickson’s Chambray.

Followed an OD cotton poplin version in 2021, a visual reference to classic US Navy N-3 type shirts.

This season, the SNIPES gets a new fancy skin, a very slubby herringbone twill (HBT) milled in Japan, about 6 Oz., light indigo warp x white weft, which we are (with great liberty) calling “HBT denim” because of the denim-like yarn color combination.

Technically speaking, this textile is not of the denim family (usually right or left hand twill fabric with indigo warp x natural weft), definitely not chambray (a plain weave fabric), but kinda looks like the latter, from a distance.

Besides fabric nerds, most will probably refer to it as “chambray”.

Blurring the lines between vintage US Navy work shirts and early US Army shirts, with the usual Mister Freedom® might-have-been design approach, we went for classic navy blue urea plastic buttons and white contrast stitching, old-school naval chambray shirt style.

The term “snipes” refers to USN enlisted personnel garment, we are taking design cues and visuals from original One-Zero jackets, as sported by SOG (Studies and Observations Group) Recon Team leaders (1-0, pronounced one-zero) during the Vietnam conflict.

On recon missions, a team leader would be assisted by a 1-1 (one-one, American radio operator), a 1-2 (one-two, the third American), and a highly-skilled and combat-seasoned selection of 9-10 indigenous troops (Montagnards or “Yards”, also affectionately referred to as “the little people” by their tall American counterparts.)

Back on point.

Three basic types of these black nylon jackets apparently exist (two pull-over front styles, and one full-button style), all developed and designed by legendary Deputy Chief Ben Baker at his CISO (Counter-Insurgency Support Office) supply operation, based on the island of Okinawa, Japan (1963-?), where custom sterile (unmarked, unlabeled and untraceable) gear such as rucksacks, Jungle Boots (the Okinawa Boot that influenced our MF® Trooper design), black pajamas (Uncle Charles’ favorite), sweaters, knives, …, were produced in total secrecy.

1-0 jackets were initially designed as rain jackets for operations, but were deemed too noisy in the bush and ended up being mostly worn around camp as “party jackets”, with sewn-on unit patches, custom embroideries and morale patches.

Needless to say, originals are ultra rare, and I’ve never seen one.

To prevent a plethora of knock-offs from flooding the militaria market, collectors are reluctant - and rightfully so - to publish detailed photos of the front and back of those an original verbatim, or using a civilian sport windbreaker pattern (which the originals were based on), we decide to dissect a Belgium Paratrooper 1955 jump smock, and adapt the design to blend it with what a plausible fourth type 1-0 jacket could have looked like.

That 1955 Belgium uniform pattern has roots in the British paratrooper Denison smocks of “beaver tail” (that kept the jacket somewhat in place when jumping off planes), re-adjusted pocket configuration for better functionality, substituted the half-zip with a six brass snaps closure, moved the cinch tabs to the natural waistline, adjusted the length to sit just below the natural waist, etc…

We left the jacket unlined, with all clean seams, another
The Lizard (or Lezard) camo version, printed canvas fabric, 100% cotton, is a nod to 1950s French TAP (Troupes Aéroportées), previously mentioned with the 2015 release of the MF® TAP Lezard “Vanden” Jacket.

Note: This disruptive pattern is our mfsc interpretation of the classic French TAP47 “Lizard” camouflage (aka “Lézzard” or “Léopard” as the
